National Institute for Patient Rights

Protecting and Promoting Patient Rights

About NIPR                          (303) 321-8600

The National Institute for Patient Rights was founded with the sole purpose of helping patients and their advocates protect and promote their rights. We are a nonpartisan, free-standing, community interest corporation with a social mission dedicated to improving the provision of health care services in a manner respectful of the dignity of patients.

NIPR sponsors programs and publishes materials to educate the general public on their rights as patients and patient advocates as well as on the violation of patient rights.

Our newsletter provides advice on how to access hidden resources in every hospital.

For example, the newsletter offers tips on how patients and their advocates can create their own informal network of embedded laypersons right within the hospital, free of charge in order to prevent the violation of patient rights.

These non-medical professionals have been inserted into hospitals to remedy problems of communication, to mediate in conflicts between healthcare professionals and patients or their advocates, and to help in the event of medical mistakes.

It is our belief, that by building a network of relationships with key hospital personnel, patients and their advocates can learn how to assert their rights without alienating their doctors or having to rely on lawyers.

NIPR tools and policies thus emerge from the following belief:

“Component management (a doctor for every organ) in medicine leads to episodic intervention which causes fragmentation and a lack of coordination among specialists in patient care, resulting in a lack of continuity for both patient and family. It also leads to the gross and widespread violation of the most fundamental patient rights of self-determination and informed consent, and, ultimately, to medical error.”
